Rene Meulensteen, initially appointed as a coach to help Martin Jol, lasted just two months in the Fulham hotseat after failing to impress his players in his first managerial job. Unrest amongst senior stars seemed to do for him – although an embarrassing FA Cup exit at the hands of League One Sheffield United didn’t help. Fulham tried to convince a shocked Meulensteen to stay on and assist his successor, Felix Magath, an offer the Dutchman wisely declined.
