Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed the signing of midfielder Clint Dempsey from Fulham – for a fee believed to be in the region of £6m.

The American international has been in dispute with Fulham for much of the summer having gone on strike at Craven Cottage to try and force through a move to Liverpool. The Anfield outfit then failed to follow through on their earlier enquiries into Dempsey’s availability and, after a public row with Fulham manager Martin Jol saw him training with the club’s youth team, the Texas-born midfielder turned down the chance to join Aston Villa earlier today.

Tottenham made a late move to sign Dempsey and quickly agreed a price with Fulham, who were resigned to losing their creative midfielder after he refused the club’s offer of a new three-year contract. Dempsey, who scored 23 goals in all competitions for Fulham last year, scored 60 goals in 225 appearances during his five years at Craven Cottage and was part of the Fulham side that reached the final of the Europa League in 2010.
