Hughes is thought to have identified the midfield as the key area to strengthen as he tries to drag Rangers away from a relegation battle and admires Murphy’s qualities, which he saw at close quarters last season. The concluding paragraphs render QPR’s intentions moot as they acknowledge that both Murphy and Fulham are unlikely to be interested in any potential deal. Losing the club captain – and midfield linchpin – towards the end of an already quiet transfer window would be suicidal.
