Fulham’s hopes of signing the Newcastle winger Jonas Gutierrez have received a real boost after the player revealed that he had heard nothing from Porto about a potential transfer.

The former Real Mallorca wide man seems set to move on after just one season at Newcastle, which culminated in the Magpies’ relegation from the Premier League, and Roy Hodgson is keen to take him to Craven Cottage on a year’s loan with a view to a permanent deal.

Porto were thought to be the favourites to sign Gutierrez until the Argentina international told South American reporters that there had been no contact.

I only know about the rumours, nobody has contacted me with this option. To play in the second division in England is not a dream, but it depends on Newcastle.
