Middlesbrough are desperately trying to finalise a deal to bring Fulham midfielder Sean Davis to the Riverside Stadium.

The 23 year-old submitted a written transfer request yesterday in a bid to force through a move and Boro boss Steve McClaren has wasted little time in trying to sign the England under-21 international. Fulham remain reluctant to sell their brightest academy graduate and turned down a £3.5m offer from Everton last month – with chief executive Bruce Langham holding out for a bid of around £7m.

McClaren is hoping that Davis’ public revelation that he wants to move on will lower Fulham’s valuation. He remained tight-lipped on Middlesbrough’s progress yesterday, saying: “Sean Davis is the kind of player we are interested in.”
