Johnny Key joined Fulham as a promising schoolboy athlete in May 1956 and scored on his first-team debut in a 4-0 FA Cup win over Yeovil Town. He made six league appearances the following year as the Whites won promotion to the top flight and became a regular on the right side of midfield until missing most of the 1962 FA Cup run through injury. He scored two brilliant goals against Tottenham Hotspur in January 1965 but one of a number of players surprisingly released by Vic Buckingham, allowing former Fulham team-mate Jimmy Hill to sign him for Coventry City in May 1966, helping his new club win promotion to the top flight in his first season at Highfield Road and then scoring City’s first ever Division One goal.
