Stolcers joins Swindon

Striker Andrejs Stolcers has signed for Yeovil Town until the end of the season. The Latvia international, who joined the Glovers on temporary terms in September to help with his fitness after being released by Premiership outfit Fulham, finally put pen to paper in an unpublicised meeting last week.

Town boss Gary Johnson broke the news exclusively to the Western Gazette on Tuesday. Johnson kept the deal under wraps until then to allow the 30 year old time to settle in the area. Johnson was also concerned about mounting interest in Stolcers from other clubs.

“Andrejs has signed a contract until the end of the season and he did that last week,” said Johnson. “He is a quality player and you can see that from his involvement in the goals we have scored in recent times. He has had a hand in almost all of them, he has a great touch and he is also a very intelligent footballer and that is what I want in my team.

“There were other teams making enquiries about him but because he had not played for a while they were worried about his fitness as I was. I am pleased that he has settled down here and allowed me to help develop his career. He has moved into the area and that is why I did it quietly and subtly, so it gave him time to settle. He gets on with the lads and enjoys the training – and I hope we can help him resurrect his international career.”

Boa Morte misses out on Portugal squad

Fulham winger Luis Boa Morte has been left out of Portugal’s squad for this summer’s European Championships.

Boa Morte, who scored nine league goals for Fulham as they finished ninth, was a surprise omission from Luiz Felipe Scolari’s 23-man squad for Euro 2004. Porto goalkeeper Vitor Baia and Stuttgart’s Fernando Meira were also not in the final party picked by the Brazilian coach.

Fulham forward Andrejs Stolcers has been selected in Latvia’s squad for the tournament in Portugal.
