Marco Silva hailed Fulham’s fight after the Whites came from behind to stun Newcastle United thanks to second half strikes from Raul Jimenez and Rodrigo Muniz.
The Cottagers could have crumbled after Jacob Murphy fired Eddie Howe’s side in front eight minutes before the end of what had been an even first half, but they turned the tables on their hosts after the interval as Jimenez’s deflected shot levelled matters before his replaced Muniz secured a famous win on Tyneside.
Silva, speaking to Sky Sports following the final whistle, said:
“I’m very pleased, really. It isn’t easy to play here against a really good side. It was well managed and it was a very physical one as well. It is really difficult to control the game against the players they have in the middle of the park, but most of the time we did it. One individual moment of quality from Anthony Gordon [cost us]. We know the quality he has and we should have been better in that moment.
Overall, I think playing here the way we did, we didn’t let them press high like they normally do. In the first half, we lacked a bit of objectiveness and we needed to be more incisive, more proactive in our attacking line. What a reaction. The first 25 minutes of the second half was from a team who really knew what to do to win a game here. A great counter-attack [for the equaliser], what a moment from ourselves.
Overall, I think we deserved the three points. I have to praise the players for their reaction in the second half. Three points is really important – we are here to fight.”
Finally we managed to hit the target but we still need a couple of players in this transfer window.
Tremendous second half improvement and we totally dominated the game but the first half was a repeat of so many other performances where we had a huge share of possession but zero cutting edge.
All credit to the team for turning things around so brilliantly after half time.
Despite being at fault for their goal, Castagne had, IMO, an excellent game, venturing forward more than we have seen of late and really strong defensively. He was helped by having a winger, in Traore, who was willing to take players on.
Andersen, too, looked more like his usual self.
Lukic and Berge ran the midfield.
That’s the double over Newcastle and 3 well deserved points.
Can’t wait for the Forest game!
