Raul Jimenez shouldn’t have taken the winning penalty at Nottingham Forest on Saturday because he wasn’t Fulham’s designated penalty taker, according to Marco Silva.
The Mexican striker shrugged off Andreas Pereira’s protestations after the Brazilian international had won the spot kick and beat Matt Sels from twelve yards to score his 50th Premier League goal. But Silva told the press afterwards that Pereira was supposed to be taking any spot kicks that came Fulham’s way.
“It’s already sorted and it will not happen again, for sure. That type of situation is clear, it’s decided before the match. Raul knew that moment was for Andreas Pereira, not for him. They spoke and it is decided it will not happen again. The players know the rules we have to have as a team and as a squad.”
The Fulham boss did heap praise on Jimenez’s continued commitment as the striker has scored three goals this term despite not starting the season as first choice.
“He is in a very good moment, it’s nice to see him back. It’s nice for him to score and be decisive again after a big injury last season. He deserves all the praise because he has been working really hard from the first day of pre-season and didn’t stop after not being picked.”
Wow!!!
I misread this originally. I thought Silva was chewing out Pereira.
How wrong could I be?
I am even more mystified now.
Love Silva but he clearly has a blind spot when it comes to certain players and that’s a great shame because he is, basically, supporting a person who, based solely on performances, should NOT be in the team and that will stop us progressing IMO.
We put up with BDR for years; even had to see him skipper the team, because Silva would not (or could not) see he added zero value to the team.
Disappointed!
Leicester City took 2 games to suss him out.
BDR was a good servant to club always gave is all, got some important goals. Do think he left at right time. Agree must be discipline in squad. But just my view Jimenez best penalty taker we’ve had in long time
Really harsh on Bobby De Cordova-Reid, who gave everything to the club, played in a number of different positions and was an important part of some very successful sides.
Completely agree with Daniel about Raul’s penalty taking ability. Up there with Danny Murphy for me.
well imho i thought the goalkeeper should have saved it
it was windy in Manchester yesterday so it was possible Pereira would have been blown over in his run up.
BDR was a good servant to FFC absolutely no complaints.
Is Perreira that special that he got to take every corner, free kicks and now penalties BUT we have never scored from one of his free kicks if these. free kicks are worked on in training ( or are they) Perreira does Sxd All else on the pitch and also didn’t Perreira get up from the tackle and start hobbling Surely the Captain on the field makes the final decision,But as people on this column have have pointed out many times do we have a proper captain as Charles as pointed out many times Maybe now give Anderson the Armband permanently BDR was ok but not game changing at this level
I had no worries about Raul taking the pen. He had already scored 4 from 4 this season. In his long career he has only missed 2. Pereira couldn’t take it anyway because he had to go off the pitch for 30 seconds and he probably would have missed. For goodness sake make Andersen captain now. Marco seems to think being captain is an honour or reward. It’s not it’s a vital role for the team.
BDR was a great servant to FFC but it was probably the right time for him to move on. Regarding Capt., he must be someone who knows the players well. it couldn’t be Anderson so early in his 2nd stint that would potentially be divisive. One thing for certain, it shouldn’t be TC, he’s the quietest on the pitch!
Pereira was not going to be allowed to take the penalty as he was going to have to go off having had the physio on. I’m very pleased that Raul had the stones to grab the ball and score but we are now back to a problem mentioned before: the captain on the field. Anderson was rightly POTM, and is forming a partnership with Calvin that begs the description ‘The Thames Barrier’. The way he barks instructions at corners and set pieces tells me that he is already doing the job. I know he has only just come back but look at how he is playing… Please Marco, make him captain. And for my two-penn’orth: I loved BDR to bits but the team evolves. COYW!!!
I really do not understand Marco on this one. Raul is so obviously a very competent and impressive penalty taker, why oh why would he nominate Pereira? Many of us don’t even agree with Pereira currently being in the starting line up. Hope this doesn’t come to kick us all in the butt. It’s a pity that discontent is now sown within the team over this, did Raul go against the rules because he knows Pereira is not the best penalty taker? Truth is he was wrong ,however, we can all remember similar situations when this kind of thing ended up in farce and cost us dearly. I hope the children have now worked out whose ball it is.
