It won’t quite make up for Hamburg after all these years, but it was interesting to see Atletico Madrid’s regret about their failure to sign Fulham forward Rodrigo Muniz splashed all over Marca this morning.
The Spanish sports paper goes into great detail about Muniz’s remarkable goalscoring exploits in the Premier League over the past couple of months before reminding their readers that Atleti had tracked the Brazilian striker since he broke into the Flamengo first team aged eighteen. They suggest that Muniz ‘escaped’ from Atleti’s clutches – with the Madrid-based outfit failing to follow up their interest when Marco Silva moved decisively to beat Middlesbrough to the youngster’s signature shortly after taking over at Craven Cottage.
Marca speculates that Muniz wants to play for Manchester United – but, for the moment, Fulham are reaping the rewards of backing both Silva’s hunch and the youngster’s ability despite a slow start by the banks of the Thames.
