Gareth Southgate is considering handing Fulham midfielder Harrison Reed an England call-up for next month’s friendlies against Brazil and Belgium, according to the Daily Mail.
The England head coach has been discouraged by Kalvin Philipps’ disastrous start to his loan spell with West Ham United and is drawing up a list of alternatives to the 28 year-old. Reed, who was outstanding as Marco Silva’s side finished tenth on their return to the top flight last term, has made 171 appearances for the Whites since signing from Southampton, initially on loan in August 2019.
The Worthing-born midfielder will likely come back to Silva’s starting line-up on Saturday at Old Trafford as Joao Palhinha serves the first game of a two-match ban after picking up his tenth booking of the season in the 2-1 win by Aston Villa last weekend.
No way will Southgate consider Harrison Reed. He’s not a member of his private members clique. A dead Kavlin Phillips would be chosen before Reed.
Reed is a great team player, should be welcome in any squad. Future captain material.
I’m the world’s biggest fan of TC but I think Reed can consider himself v unlucky this term. He was one of our best players in the Anfield defeat and again vs Newcastle. Doesn’t offer the creativity of TC or the bite of Palhinha but more than a rival to Phillips on current form…
How do the press come up with this crap?
Harrison Reed is one of my favourite players but he would be the first to admit that he has struggled for form this season and, when he plays, is way below the standard he set last year.
There have been several games when he’s been on the bench and not chosen to come on which leads me to think that, possibly, he has been carrying an injury of some kind. A back to form Harrison Reed is a big asset.
But, to be linked with an England call up is too ridiculous for words.
Mind you, with Southgate, you never know. He’s the muppet that continued selecting Maguire when he couldn’t get in the United team, regularly selected Phillips who couldn’t even get a sniff of a game at City and stuck with Henderson when he was playing in the desert in front of a few hundred supporters.
Hey, maybe, pigs really can fly!
