Fulham goalkeeper George Wickens saved two penalties as Ross County lost 1-0 at Celtic yesterday afternoon.
The lifelong Fulham fan, who impressed in his last loan spell at Wealdstone, had to pick the ball out of his own net within a minute when Alistair Johnston’s deflected drive gave the league leaders a perfect start. But Celtic laboured for the remainder of the game, especially after they won a penalty when Simon Murray tripped Callum McGregor.
Wickens guessed the right way to palm away Luis Palma’s spot-kick and had to produce another reaction stop immediately afterwards when the referee ordered a re-take after the video assistant spotted Ross County encroachment. The 22 year-old made several second half saves before County squandered good chances to equalise in stoppage time.
Actually, he didn’t save two penalties. He saved one penalty twice! There was a single penalty award that was retaken after the Ross County players caused an infringement during the first take.
So while the goalie did in fact have two penalty saves, they were both for the one penalty award against his team.
