Former Fulham centre back Jim Hicks has abruptly resigned as executive head of coaching at the Professional Footballers’ Association, according to the Daily Mail.

Hicks had raised concerns about the direction of the PFA under new chief executive Maheta Molango internally but his decision to step down from the role he had held for sixteen years is still a surprise. The 63 year-old is a massive champion of women’s football, having spent fifteen years in charge of Millwall Lionesses before joining the players’ union, and is understood to have been disappointed by Molango’s corporate approach that risks diluting the PFA’s historical pastoral role for their members.

Hicks, who played 46 games for the Whites in three injury-hit seasons in the 1980s, already has a number of offers to work in the women’s game having led the Lionesses to a historic Cup double in 1997. He oversaw the development of England internationals Mary Philip and Katie Chapman, who later turned professional at Fulham, at Millwall.
