Tom Cairney has told the Evening Standard that he is targeting a longer-term contract at Craven Cottage – and that ending his playing career at Craven Cottage would be a ‘dream scenario’.

The Scottish international signed a year’s extension to his existing deal earlier this month, but believes he can follow in the footsteps of team mates Tim Ream and Willian in playing for Marco Silva’s side well into his late thirties. The midfielder, now 33, has starred having returned to the Fulham starting line-up in November.

The Fulham captain said:

I can picture myself going longer [than 2025]. In my head, that’s how I feel. I feel good, feel fit. I’m 33 years young. Footballers play a lot longer now. I remember when 35 used to be the be all and end all. But now footballers look after themselves so well their whole career. Look at Thiago Silva — he’s 39 and one of Chelsea’s best players. Injury-free, I’ll stay at Fulham longer.

I did say during lockdown I want to play football until my legs fall off, because staying at home for three months was difficult. I feel like you’re a long time retired, so I’ll play football for as long as I can. But if we’re talking dream scenarios: to stay at Fulham until the end.”
