Fulham head coach Marco Silva insisted he was ‘really proud’ of his side even though they conceded two late goals to lose an epic encounter at Anfield earlier this afternoon.

The Whites came from behind twice before substitute Bobby De Cordova-Reid headed them 3-2 up with ten minutes to play, but late strikes from Endo and Trent Alexander-Arnold gave Liverpool a dramatic home win. But Silva, speaking to BBC Sport after the final whistle, was delighted with the way his players executed their game plan.

“I’m really proud of them, definitely. The way we played, the way we matched Liverpool, the way we showed the spirit after great, great goals every time. Normally, four great goals like that don’t happen in one match. We were able to lead 3-2 late in the second half. I’m proud – we didn’t deserve this result, of course. They didn’t create many chances in the first half and I felt we were in control at 3-2.”

Silva felt De Cordova-Reid had been fouled before Alexander-Arnold’s winning goal, but insisted he would not be changing the adventurous approach he has implemented since taking over at Craven Cottage from Scott Parker.

“It looks to me as if [before] the fourth goal there is a foul on Bobby [De Cordova-Reid] I have to say. When the cross comes from Darwin Nunez, Bobby challenged [for the ball] in the air and Tsmikas … it is a foul on him, the referee should see this. It is not a VAR situation but in my opinion it is a foul. I don’t want to go in this direction, I really want to take the positives from the game. We are taking many, but unfortunately not the points – or what the boys deserve.

This is our image as a team. It doesn’t make sense if you want to play in a certain way, you want to build something as a football club from two years ago almost, it would not make any sense to change things. Of course, against these types of sides, they obligate you to do something different. The game at this level demands a lot from ourselves, but we have to express ourselves on the pitch and the way we did it was really good. I think the players understood the plan, they executed it really well and, unfortunately for us, we deserved more.”

We had to adjust some things for the opposition. We know that they are always a threat if you are playing an open game. They can attack you in behind every time, the crowd in some moments can lift. At 3-3, I knew it was a moment for us to have a different control in that situation. We missed one moment that we pressed from the side and they punished [us]. It was when I was going to make a substitution to calm down the game, unfortunately it was not in time but we have to take the positives and analyse the game like we did against Wolves.
