Antonee Robinson’s sensational long-range strike helped the United States beat Trinidad and Tobago last night in the first leg of their CONCACAF Nations League quarter-final in Texas last night.
Having laid on an assist for Ricardo Pepi’s opening goal, the Fulham full back cracked home a superb individual effort from 20 yards out after taking a touch to control a clearance following a cross from Giovanni Reyna. Reyna added a third goal – but Robinson was voted man of the match as the USA eased to a comfortable 3-0 win. He was joined in the American defence by his Craven Cottage colleague Tim Ream.
There was plenty of other international for Fulham’s stars. Martial Godo earned an international debut for England’s new Elite League squad after his fine form on loan at Wigan Athletic, although England were well beaten 3-0 by Italy’s under-20 side.
Alex Iwobi and Calvin Bassey were both named in the starting line-up for Nigeria’s first World Cup qualifier against Lesotho. The Super Eagles looked a little rusty – drawing 1-1.
Marek Rodak and Joao Palhinha were unused substitutes for Slovakia and Portugal respectively, whilst Fulham under 18 winger Tom Olyott got an assist as Republic of Ireland’s under 18s triumphed 2-1 against Belgium.
