Chris Coleman has resigned as manager of Greek Super League side Atromitos.

The former Fulham manager has called it quits after twenty months in charge of Atromitos having seen his team struggle this season after the club imposed swingeing budget cuts – that saw the departure of his trusted assistant Kit Symons over the summer. Atromitos were third from bottom of the top flight after their first seven fixtures having been beaten by Olympiakos, Panathinaikos and AEK Athens.

Coleman, who famously became the youngest Premier League manager in history having taken over from Jean Tigana at Fulham in 2003, steered Atromitos to safety having been appointed with the side struggling against the drop in January 2022. He led them to eighth last season but the 53 year-old, who guided Wales to the Euro 2016 semi-finals, has decided to leave after a chastening start to the new campaign.

In a club statement that announced the news, Atromitos said:

“Atromitos would like to thank Chris for his contribution to our team, since he took it over in very difficult times. He has been an example of dedication and hard work. He took over the technical leadership of Atromitos in January 2022 and remained on the bench in 61 matches. Chris, you will forever belong to the Atromitos family and we wish you every success on a personal and professional level.”
