Former Fulham goalkeeper Sergio Rico has come out of a coma three weeks after suffering a horse riding accident in Spain, his wife has confirmed.

Rico, who played 32 games for the Whites whilst on loan from Sevilla during the Whites’ 2018/19 relegation season, suffered life-threatening injuries when he was knocked off his horse by another horse in Andalusia at the end of May. The former Spanish international, who has spent the last three seasons with Paris Saint-Germain, suffered a setback when doctors tried to bring him out of a coma but his wife shared happier news with Telecino this afternoon.

Alba Silva said her husband was ‘taking small steps forward and the truth is that we already see the light a little more.’ She added:

“Thanks to the hospital and the staff who have been incredible not only with Sergio but with all the patients. Thanks to them and thanks to God, to everyone who has sent us a lot of strength, we are moving forward. Little by little he is recovering and I knew from the beginning that he was going to get better because he is a champion.”
