Former Fulham defender Maxime Le Marchand has tonight announced his retirement after being dogged by persistent back problems in recent years.

The 33 year-old, who signed for Fulham from Nice alongside Jean Michael Seri in July 2018 made 48 appearances for the Whites before signing for Strasbourg in August 2021. He was part of the side managed by Scott Parker that won promotion back to the Premier League at the first attempt in 2020 by beating Brentford in the Championship play-off final.

The French centre back wrote on Instagram this evening:

“Dear team-mates, dear supporters, dear friends,

I’ve had back problems again in the last few months despite my first surgery a year and a half ago. After getting new pictures and the doctors’ consultations in the last few weeks, I’ve made the decision to end my football career. My disappointment is great. But the happiness of having been able to share these moments and emotions with you is immense.

From Rennes to Strasbourg through Le Have, Nice, Fulham and Antwerp, thank you for making this adventure even more beautiful. See you soon!”
