Marco Silva praised Fulham’s ‘ambition’ and ‘desire’ after his side recorded a club record fifteenth top flight win at Southampton this afternoon.

Second half goals from Carlos Vinicius and Aleksandar Mitrovic secured a routine victory at St. Mary’s as the Saints were relegated from the top flight. The Fulham boss felt Fulham’s application was excellent and he lauded a professional display in his post-match interview with BBC Sport:

“We showed our ambition and desire to keep going. I have to first of all congratulate the players, of course, on another three points with a clean sheet. It is a great feeling for us as well and a fantastic away support from our fans. They sold out that end and their support from the first to the last minute was fantastic and for us to be able to give this feeling for them to come here and win the football match with a clean sheet is really important.

It was a decent performance I have to say. It was not consistent during the 95 minutes, but we were the best team on the pitch. We started really well, managing the game from the first minute, pushing them back and controlling the situation. There were a couple of moments on the counter attack they created something but nothing really special and I think it was one of the quietest games for Bernd [Leno] this season. We didn’t create many chances because they sat back with a lot of players behind the ball and it is difficult to find the spaces.

We gave some feedback at half time for us to improve a little bit the speed when we arrive in certain areas of the pitch. I think we did it. The first goal is a good example of what we did and we deserved the three points. It was a very good feeling to see Carlos scoring again and improving and more confident. It is a great feeling to have Mitro back. As I said before the match, we miss him for everything he can add to our team. He is a really importance piece in our squad: he’s been important for me ever since I arrived at this football club. I think he has scored 55 goals in 69 games for me – the number is impressive. It is nice to him come back and score a goal.

This is Mitrovic. Everyone knows we miss it a lot. I’m sure with him we are stronger. It is clear that it was completely exaggerated the number of games that he was out, compared with everything what’s happened this season – it is my opinion, of course. But he has worked really hard during this period and everyone in the football club has supported him as well. When you can provide for him inside the box, he is a top goalscorer. He did in the game what he normally does. He has been a very good professional – and now I want him to forget completely what’s happened and continue to score goals.

It has been a brilliant season, I have to say. The players have been brilliant. Everyone in the beginning of the season said we were the first favourites to go down. We are here, in my opinion, where this club belongs. It has been hard work from all of us. The season didn’t finish yet – we want more. We have two games to play and we want to fight for the six points that are ahead of us. The season has been really, really good, brilliant but we have to keep going.”
