Fulham scouts watched Milan van Ewijk in Herenveen’s home defeat at the hands of AZ Alkmaar as the Whites cast a wide net in search of a new right back.

The 22 year-old has made 56 first-team appearances for Heerenveen and developed into one of the Eredivisie’s most consistent full backs since signing from Den Haag for £550,000 in July 2021. The former Holland under-21 international is the latest link as Fulham seek to present Marco Silva with a comprehensive list of alternatives should a move for his preferred target – Arsenal’s Cedric Soares – fall through during the January transfer window.

van Ewijk, who can also play as a right winger, would find himself competing with compatriot Kenny Tete should he move to Craven Cottage – although a deal is still a long-shot as Herenveen are fighting to hold onto their key players, including goalkeeper Andries Noppert, until the end of this season. Fulham would need to pay at least £3m to sign the former Excelsior Maassluis defender, who is under contract at the Abe Lenstra Stadium for two more years.

Silva has made the recruitment of reinforcements in the right back position as a top priority this month having been disappointed by the performances of Kevin Mbabu after the Swiss international signed for Fulham in the summer.
