Fulham are in talks with FC Twente about signing their right back Joshua Brenet, according to the Athletic.

The move comes after the Whites became frustrated with the lack of progress in their proposed move to sign Marco Silva’s top January target Cedric Soares from Arsenal. They were initially interested in securing a permanent move for the Portuguese right back, but a possible loan has floundered over a lack of agreement between the parties over the percentage of wages that Fulham would pay and the need to convert one of their two Premier League loans to a permanent transfer to facilitate the right back’s arrival.

Brenet, a 28 year-old Dutch defender, has scored seven goals in 35 appearances for Twente – having found the net in a 1-1 draw with Feyenoord at the weekend. The Dutch international, who has won two senior caps for his country, came through the PSV Eindhoven youth academy and went on to make 150 first-team appearances for his first professional club. Silva is desperate to add competition for Kenny Tete before the close of the transfer window having been underwhelmed by Kevin Mbabu’s performances since his summer switch from Wolfsburg.
