Fulham under 21 captain Ollie O’Neill has been nominated for the PL2 player of the month award after an exceptional start to the season.

The Republic of Ireland under-21 international, who took over the captain’s armband for Steve Wigley’s side after Sonny Hilton joined Carlisle United on loan, has been in fine fettle from the first whistle this term. The Ealing-born midfielder made one and scored another on the opening day as the Whites beat West Ham in Motspur Park before bagging a brace against Crystal Palace – when he followed up a fine free-kick with an unerring finish three minutes later.

The nineteen year-old supplied Fulham’s second goal at Leigh Sports Valley in an entertaining draw with Manchester United by crossing for Terry Ablade to finish at the far post to take his tally for August to three goals and two assists. O’Neill, who committed his future to Fulham by signing a new contract at Craven Cottage in the summer, is up against Southampton striker Dom Ballard, Everton forward Thomas Cannon, the Leeds duo Mateo Fernandez and Sonny Perkins, Abu Kamara of Norwich City, Leicester wide man Tawanda Maswanhise and Sunderland winger Max Thompson.
