Fulham are mulling a move to bring Matt Targett back to Craven Cottage this summer, according to reports this evening.

The Aston Villa left back appears unlikely to make his loan move to Newcastle United permanent at the end of this season with Eddie Howe reportedly already investigating other options. Targett could well be heading away from Villa Park after Steven Gerrard signed Lucas Digne during the last transfer window.

The 26 year-old defender enjoyed an excellent loan spell with Fulham in the second half of the 2017/2018 season, linking up flawlessly with Ryan Sessegnon along the left flank, as Slavisa Jokanovic’s side put together a club record 23-match unbeaten run. The Whites went up via the play-offs but decided against turning Targett’s loan from Southampton into a permanent move – opting to sign Joe Bryan instead.

Intriguingly, Villa’s rumoured asking price for Targett is £15m – which is thought to be what Southampton were seeking for him four years ago. Fulham could look to strengthen their options at left back in the summer with neither Bryan nor Antonee Robinson, the regular first team left back under Marco Silva, having yet to convince in the top flight.
