Fulham midfielder Fabio Carvalho has been named in Portugal’s under 21 squad for the first time.
The talented teenager, who has enjoyed an outstanding season with the Championship leaders, has been named in Rui Jorge’s squad for the forthcoming European Championship qualifiers against Iceland and Greece. Carvalho, who was born in Torres Vedras, moved to England at the age of eleven and had been capped at under-16, under-17 and under 18 level by the Three Lions.
Stories in the past week had suggested that Carvalho was close to a call up to England’s under 21 squad, with the Football Association waiting on the Fulham youngster to complete a citizenship test as he did not have a British passport. But Carvalho has now been picked to play for Portugal and, should he feature in either of the qualifiers, will be eligible for the country of his birth.
The nineteen year-old, who scored on his first Premier League start last season, has scored eight goals and added six assists in 26 appearances this term as Fulham have stormed to the top of the Championship, but his future looks uncertain with his current Craven Cottage contract expiring at the end of this season.
