Perhaps the signing of Dimitar Berbatov didn’t quite work out as anyone had anticipated. The act of bringing him to Fulham was audacious to say the least. It ended in disappointment, with the mercurial Bulgarian plying his trade for Monaco as the Whites went down with a whimper under Felix Magath, but there were a few sublime moments. None more so that this stunning volley that settled a desperately drab game against Stoke, nine years ago today.
It is still spellbinding today. Such a sublime combination of exquisite technical ability and elegance, making the act of striking a ball dropping out of the sky so straightforward. Berbatov might well have been past his prime at Craven Cottage, but it was still a joy to watch him play.
