Fulham midfielder Luke Harris led Wales Under 17s to a 3-1 win over Ukraine tonight as they began their European U17 Championship qualifying campaign in fine style.

The teenage midfielder, named as captain for the first group game by manager Rich Williams for the opening game of qualifying in Portugal, put Wales in from with an assured finish after being set up by Swansea forward Ben Lloyd. A second half strike from Alex Roberts doubled the Welsh advantage and, although Nazar Balaba reduced Ukraine’s arrears, substitute Cole Fleming made sure of victory with seven minutes remaining.

The young Welsh side face hosts Portugal, who thrashed Kazakhstan 5-0 tonight, in their next game on Saturday.
