Chris Martin’s uneasy loan spell at Craven Cottage was memorably summed up by Slavisa Jokanovic in a post-match interview after the Scottish international had refused to play for Fulham in an attempt to force through a return to parent club Derby County. The plan was masterminded by Steve McClaren but Jokanovic insisted: ‘We are not a train station. You cannot come in and out when you want’.

Martin was the focal point that Jokanovic craved to make his side more effective, but he struggled to be clinical in front of goal – even before the Derby saga saw him kicking his heels for a few weeks. He scored eleven goals in 34 games as Fulham were beaten in the play-off semi final and returned to Pride Park. Martin is now at Bristol City.
