Fulham midfielder Tom Cairney has been called up to the Scotland squad for the first time after Gordon Strachan watched him star in the outstanding win at Newcastle United last week.

Cairney could make his international debut in the friendly against Canada, which precedes a crucial World Cup qualifier against Slovenia. The Fulham midfielder has caught Strachan’s eye in recent weeks and the Scotland boss said his outstanding form meant a call up was a neccessity.

“Tom Cairney was the best man on the pitch at St James’ Park,” Gordon Strachan said after announcing his squad. “But that was no surprise, he has been the best man on the pitch on many occasions.”
