David Button has admitted he is still in the dark about Chris Martin’s future after the Scottish international refused to line up for Fulham against Reading on Friday.
The on-loan striker has told Fulham that he wishes to return to Derby County despite featuring regularly for Slavisa Jokanovic’s side since making the temporary switch to Craven Cottage at the end of August. Jokanovic has insisted that the player remains at Fulham as the clubs had agreed a season-long loan and, in passionate comments after Friday night’s game at the Madjeski Stadium was abandoned, urged the forward to show his current club some more respect.
Button told GetWestLondon after the early abandonment that he knew very little about the situation:
It’s nothing to do with me. I didn’t really know much about it. You want people to show they’re committed so I don’t know what’s gone on. Until we get the full story it’s hard to say as we don’t know what’s gone on behind the scenes. He’s got his reasons but it’s one of those things you get on with.
It seems unlikely that Martin will feature in tomorrow afternoon’s home clash with promotion chasing Brighton and Hove Albion tomorrow so that could lead to another opportunity up front for Brazilian forward Lucas Piazon, who is currently on loan from Chelsea.
