The mercurial Ross McCormack was meant to fire Fulham straight back to the Premier League after signing from Leeds for £11m in July 2014, but the madness of Felix Magath’s reign made that largely impossible. The Scottish striker’s goals and guile were crucial in keeping the Whites in the Championship for his first two seasons at Craven Cottage – and he scored a remarkable 42 goals in a century of appearances for a side that never seriously challenged for promotion at all. McCormack was exceptionally effective in England’s second tier but never recovered his form after joining Aston Villa for £12m in August 2016.
