Slavisa Jokanovic urged Fulham chairman Shahid Khan to build on his side’s ‘very important start’ by bankrolling several additions to his squad before the end of the August transfer window.

The Fulham head coach was delighted with his side’s application as they followed up a surprise home win over Newcastle with an impressive victory at Preston North End to record consecutive league wins in their first two matches of the season for the first time since 2000. But the Serbian insists he needs reinforcements to mount a serious push for promotion from the Championship.

The season is very long and at the moment we are lucky to find good results. Matt Smith works very hard and I am sure he will help us in the future but I need more people in this position.

The league has so many games, and we don’t have a big enough squad to be ready for what is in front of us. I have talked about signings, Fulham need them. I want to be successful and so I need more options in my squad.

People might be thinking ‘this guy is selfish’, I am not selfish I want to be successful and I believe we need some steps more and more players. It’s a very good start for us, Fulham haven’t won their first two opening games since 2000.

I have to be happy with how we played but at the same time this is only the start and we have a very, very long season ahead of us.
