Fulham midfielder Tom Cairney joked about his 100 per cent win record as Fulham captain – but was deadly serious on the chances of beating Newcastle United in the season’s opener on Friday night.

The midfielder was handed the armband for the first time against Crystal Palace on Saturday in the absence of Ross McCormack, now the daily subject of a move from the Cottage.

The player, who signed for a hefty £4 million from Blackburn a year ago, wondered out loud whether pre-season preparation has been good enough to get one over a side odds-on to bounce back to the Premier League at the first attempt.

He said: “Every year you worry have you done enough; have you done too much – it’s that psychological thing.

“But I’m confident we’ll have all guns blazing and get off to a good start against the side that are favourites for the league.”
