Fulham new signing Sone Aluko is looking forward to playing in his preferred number ten role under Slavisa Jokanovic this season.

The summer signing from Hull City has operated as a striker at several points in his career – most profitably at Rangers – but is clearly more comfortable playing behind a front man. Aluko told GetWestLondon Jokanovic’s vision for him to fulfil that number ten role was a key factor in convincing him to move to Craven Cottage:

“One of the reasons I came here is because he wanted to play me in what I call my natural position. That suits my game, and in pre-season I think that has shown – I’ve been gelling with the strikers and the midfield; we’ve got a good understanding. It doesn’t have to be number 10 – that’s the position the manager wants me to play but some games I’ll play wide, some games I’ll play through the middle; I’m flexible.”

Aluko was delighted to mark his home debut with the opening goal when he punished a Palace defensive mix-up to put Fulham in front during an impressive 3-1 win over Premier League opposition.

“First goal at Craven Cottage and the first time I’ve played here in a Fulham shirt. I suppose it was nice to get a goal at home quickly because it settles you down.”

Aluko revealed he has settled in well at Fulham and can’t wait for the Championship season to get underway.

“Obviously I was born down here so it’s good to be back down South, visiting family but I’ve enjoyed it – the boys have been very welcoming and the staff have been great with me so it’s so far so good. This season I just want to play as many games as I can. Last season I didn’t play anywhere near as many games as I wished when I was fit – I feel in good shape now. I can’t be any happier with how pre-season’s gone – I’ve scored, got a couple of assists and hopefully I can take that into the season.”
