Bryan Ruiz endured a frustrating Fulham career, which regularly promised the potential that persuaded Martin Jol to pay more than £10m for the man who ended FC Twente’s long wait for an Eredivsie title. The Costa Rican creator was a scorer of spectacular goals, including against Everton and Bolton Wanderers in his first season at Craven Cottage, but struggled for consistency as he found it difficult to deal with the physicality of the English game. Ruiz scored thirteen goals in 108 appearances for Fulham but left with his spell in London feeling unfulfilled – having finished in the Championship, which was a level below his mercurial talent.
