Felix Magath says he’s ‘disappointed and surprised’ by Fulham’s decision to axe him and claims he is confident he could’ve turned their season around.

The German was given the boot on Thursday with the Whites rock-bottom of the table after taking just one point from their opening seven Championship games.

However, Magath, who was unable to stop the club being relegated from the Premier League, says he could’ve changed their fortunes.

The 61-year-old, speaking in a statement via German news agency DPA, said: “I am disappointed and surprised, because I am sure that I would have stopped the downfall of the club with drastic changes in the squad to a young team, although the first results of the season have not shown this.”

He later tweeted: “I want to thank all those amazing Fulham fans for their tremendous support during the last months. I’m very sorry our work didn’t lead to better results.

“I enjoyed every single day to work for this club & want to wish Fulham all the best.”
