Today’s Sunday People carries a fascinating historical Fulham anecdote.
Mohamed Al-Fayed apparently snubbed Louis van Gaal, reportedly a shoe-in for the Manchester United job this summer, in favour of Chris Coleman eleven years ago. Then chief executive Bruce Langham – he of the ‘very expensive consultants’ – recommended the Dutchman as a permanent successor to Jean Tigana in the summer of 2003 but Coleman’s feat in keeping a doomed-looking Fulham above the relegation zone after taking over with five games to go earned the popular Welshman the managerial job on a full-time basis.
