Fulham are hoping to persuade former manager Rene Meulensteen to stay on as first-team coach under new boss Felix Magath, according to various reports this morning.

The club have denied that they sacked Meulensteen to bring in the German survival specialist and want him to revert to the role he held under Martin Jol. The Daily Telegraph claimed this morning that the London club expected the former Manchester United coach to report for training at their Motspur Park training ground today, whilst the Daily Mirror reported that Fulham valued his ‘nous’ as a coach but harboured doubts about whether he was the right fit for a relegation battle.

Neither newspaper felt Fulham’s hopes of hanging on to Meulensteen, who went live on BBC Radio 5 Live after the news of Magath’s appointment broke to describe Fulham ‘as panicking,’ were likely to succeed.
