Dimitar Berbatov joined Fulham on summer transfer deadline day in August 2012 after a lengthy courtship by Martin Jol, who had managed him at Tottenham Hotspur. The Bulgarian forward’s time at Craven Cottage was a mixed bag: he finished his first season with fifteen goals in 35 appearances – having enlivened Fulham’s attack impressively – but struggled in his second campaign, scoring just five times in nineteen matches, before being released to join Monaco in January 2014 as Rene Meulensteen’s men mounted an unsuccessful fight against relegation. There were some wonderful moments of Berbatov’s undoubted quality in a Fulham shirt, such as a sensational volley against Stoke, and an amazing piece of close control against Aston Villa.
