Fulham manager Martin Jol has admitted that Fulham fans had every right to vent their anger in his direction after last weekend’s 1-1 draw with West Brom.
The Cottagers looked set to scrape their first win since beating Sunderland in their opening game before Gareth McAuley netted in added time to snatch a point for the Baggies.
The Fulham manager was subjected to jeers and cries of “Jol out” from some sections of the home support, which the Dutchman described as “disappointing” in his post-match interviews.
But Jol admits he regrets his choice of words last weekend, when he also questioned what fans of a club of Fulham’s stature should realistically expect.
“I think it is better not to talk about it, but I did, and I shouldn’t have because they are entitled to express themselves,” said the Dutchman.
“They pay us to play football for them and they have got an opinion, and to lose [two points] in the 92nd minute was very disappointing – not only for them, but for me and the club.
“I talked about the fact that expectations can make you very unhappy at any club – Chelsea, even Manchester United, big clubs, smaller clubs, and especially at Fulham as well.
“We feel that we have got good players, but five of the seven new players were not even there last week so we still have to find a balance.”
Jol remains confident that results will improve as the squad gels together, adding: “It is not easy, but I think there are probably 10 or 11 other teams that are not settled and play with different players, new players, so what I mean is that as soon as we gel together, we will be fine.”
