David Stockdale hopes to stake another claim for Fulham’s number one shirt in tonight’s Capital One Cup clash at Burton Albion.

The 27-year-old started in place of the injured Maarten Stekelenburg in Saturday’s 3-1 defeat to Arsenal and is likely to get another chance to impress at the Pirelli Stadium.

Stockdale has made just 28 appearances for the Whites since his arrival from Darlington five years ago, spending spells out on loan at Rotherham, Leicester, Plymouth, Ipswich and Hull.

However, the former York City youngster hasn’t given up hope of establishing himself as the first-choice shot-stopper in SW6.

He said: “It shouldn’t be long until Maarten is back. I will just do the best I can while I am in the team, like I always do when the manager picks me.

“I have been here five, nearly six years now. You know your role but you are always striving for better.

“If he decides to go with Maarten, that is his choice. If he decides to go with me, I will give 100 per cent.

“We have got a lot of good goalkeepers so everyone is on their toes at the moment, which is nice for the club.”

Jol is likely to ring the changes for the visit to the League Two side, but Stockdale says the Whites have enough strength in depth to see them through.

He added: “Luckily enough I have been in League Two so I know what to expect. They will get in your face and try and press.

“We have to approach the game in the usual way. If you over think, it could become a banana skin.

“But if you play your usual game, you should have enough quality to see you through.”
