David Stockdale has not given up hope of an England recall in time for the World Cup and wants to make the most of an opportunity to shine at Fulham.

The goalkeeper, 27, played against Arsenal on Saturday and will continue to deputise for injured No1 Maarten Stekelenburg at Burton Albion in the Capital One Cup tonight.

He has not been called up to a squad since Fabio Capello selected him for the friendly against Sweden in 2011 – in which he did not play – but hopes to catch the eye in Stekelenburg’s absence.

“I believe I can get back there [in the squad] but you need games,” said Stockdale (above) ahead of today’s England squad announcement for the World Cup qualifiers against Moldova and Ukraine. “If that does come along, I would love to represent my country.”

Roy Hodgson’s goalkeeping options are limited, with just three players – Joe Hart, John Ruddy and Ben Foster – regular starters in the Premier League.

Celtic’s Fraser Forster is another option, although like Stockdale he has been called up by England a number of times without being used.
