Fulham manager Martin Jol has given a cautious response to news that Aston Villa striker Darren Bent is close to joining the club, according to BT Sport.

Reports earlier today suggested that a deal was all but done to see Bent switch Villa Park for Craven Cottage in a £5million move, though Jol has played down talk that the move has been finalised.

The Dutchman has signed Bent before during his time as manager of Tottenham, and admits he has been keen to add a new striker to give his side some pace upfront ahead of the new season.

Bent looks a good complement to Fulham forward Dimitar Berbatov, also formerly of Spurs, but Jol insisted there would not be any official news for a couple of days.

“We don’t speculate on players and can only give an answer when a deal is finalised. We’ll see in the next day or two,” he said.

“We need quality up front and we’re trying to get someone in that position in the next week. We need some pace up front.”

Bent has also been linked with Newcastle and a loan move to Crystal Palace this summer, after falling out of favour with Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert last season.

Once thought of as one of the most clinical finishers in the Premier League, Villa initially signed Bent from Sunderland for £24million in 2011.
