Fulham keeper Mark Schwarzer may have hit 40 but Fulham boss Martin Jol still feels safe when the Australian is between the sticks at Craven Cottage.

The big Aussie’s contract is due for renewal at the end of the current campaign and talks are yet to take place between Schwarzer and the club.

However, the veteran has been an ever-present for the Whites this term and has beaten off competition from David Stockdale to claim the gloves.

Stockdale has moved on loan to Hull City in search of first-team football after failing to snatch the Fulham number one shirt from his older team-mate.

And Jol reckons if Schwarzer’s physique in the showers is anything to go by then the keeper will hold off the youngster for a while yet.

“I feel that in training he is the same and he is always there, as he was last year, to save points for us,” Jol said. “That is why he is still there.

“I don’t know [how long he can carry on] because that is up to him and how he feels but if you see him get out of the shower he is not looking like a plumber. He is looking like a top athlete so he is fit and I think he can play.”

Schwarzer is set to continue in goal as Fulham travel to QPR on Saturday.
