Martin Jol has handed Alex Kacaniklic a first Premier League start after his impressive debut as a first-half substitute against Norwich last weekend.

The young Swedish winger will join a reshaped midfield as Mahamadou Diarra replaces the ill Danny Murphy and Bryan Ruiz comes in for the injured Pavel Pogrebnyak. The Russian striker’s failure of a fitness test means that Clint Dempsey will lead the line at the Reebok Stadium.

Darren Pratley, who started his career with Fulham, returns to the Bolton starting line-up having shaken off a leg injury but defender Greitar Steinsson has to settle for a place on the bench.

BOLTON WANDERERS: Bogdan; Ricketts, Wheater, Ream, Alonso; Reo-Coker, Pratley, M Davies, Petrov, Ryo; Ngog. Subs: Jaaskelainen, Steinsson, Eagles, Knight, K Davies, Klasnic, Sordell.
