Matthew Briggs has joined Peterborough United on a month’s loan.

The England under-21 international has struggled to displace John Arne Riise in the Fulham first team despite a bright start to the season. Manager Martin Jol turned down an approach from Bristol City to take him on loan in January, as he was in need of defensive cover, but agreed to send the club’s academy graduate out on loan to aid his development.

Briggs, who became the Premier League’s youngest ever player when he made his debut for Fulham at Middlesbrough aged 16 years and 65 days in May 2007, has made fourteen appearances for the club this season, scoring his first goal for the club at Crusaders in the Europa League. He hasn’t played for the first team since Jol’s side crashed out of Europe against Odense in December.
