Martin Jol admitted that he had gambled with an adventurous team selection at Stamford Bridge this afternoon – with Clint Dempsey’s second half equaliser securing a merited point.

With Bobby Zamora and Andy Johnson both unavailable through injury, Jol played Orlando Sa up front on his own and, with three holding midfielders on the bench, paired Moussa Dembele alongside skipper Danny Murphy in central midfield.

Sometimes you have to take a gamble and that is what we did. Our two main strikers dropped out so we had to come up with something else. I think it paid off.

We had to do it a bit differently today. We played with two on the flanks and two offensive midfielder players and we caused them problems.

We tried to keep the ball and did ever so well in the second half. They scored but we came back and that gave us a big boost. We came back with quality and urgency.
