Club press officers must hate international weeks. An errant player makes a statement to a newspaper from their homeland and all hell breaks loose. So it was today with Moussa Dembele’s suggestion that he would be interested in a move to Tottenham because it would be ‘a step up for him’.

Quick as a flash a retraction of sorts appears on the Fulham website.

Yes, I was asked about the links with Spurs, and I did respond that I was flattered by interest in me, because it means I am playing well, nothing more. However I am happy at Fulham and I am under contract here. I am making progress under Martin Joland adding further dimensions to my game, so I’m happy playing here.

I want to assure the manager, the fans and of course the chairman, I am fully committed to the club and that any links with other clubs are nothing but speculation, and something I am not even thinking about at this time.

I think that’s about as clear as mud. Dembele’s now apparently ‘fully committed’ to Fulham. Whether that means the club would turn down a £12m offer from Spurs for his services, is another question entirely.
