After passing a medical, 23 year old Czech midfielder Marcel Gecov is set to sign in the next few days. Sky Sports has quotes from the international and he’s understandably pleased:

“I am enormously happy because it has always been my dream to play in the Premier League.”

His agent Jiri Muller seems slightly taken aback at the infamous Fuham medical:

“It was very demanding. I have never seen such a thorough medical as this. About 20 doctors and other experts checked Marcel.

“He underwent physical, functional, medical and psychological tests and everything turned out okay in the end.”

The fee is understood to be around 700 thousand pounds which is very little in Premier League terms so any gamble we take is minimal. A defensive midfielder and one that has played at every international youth level, he won the man of the match award when the Czechs knocked England out of the recent U21 competition courtesy of a late 2-1 win as well as earning a place in the team of the tournament, which is no mean feat considering the opposition. A tough tackler, he will be competing with the likes of Danny Murphy, Dickson Etuhu and Steve Sidwell for a central starting berth. Good luck to him, I’m sure he’ll do well here and develop well under a talented coaching set up.
