Mark Hughes lasted a mere season at Craven Cottage after taking over from Roy Hodgson, lambasting the club’s lack of ambition as he resigned in June 2011. The reality was that the Welshman, fortunate to survive a dreadful run that saw the Whites in the relegation zone in December, had lost a boardroom battle over summer transfer targets and jumped ship certain he would get the Aston Villa or Chelsea vacancies. Neither materialised and Hughes later admitted he left SW6 far too hastily having qualified for the Europa League with a strong run of the form towards the end of the 2010/11 campaign.
